Macau is a bustling city known for its casinos and its reputation as the “Eastern Las Vegas”, but what we may not know is that Macau is also home to some of the best hiking trails in the region. With breathtaking and stunning nature views all around, these hikes offer you a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Whether you are a professional hiker or just a beginner, there must be a hiking trail perfect for you. Here are the best hikes in Macau that offer you a spectacular hiking experience.

Coloane Trail

Being the longest hiking trail in the peninsula, the Coloane Trail is famous for its stunning views of the South China Sea and the Cotai Strip. The trail is approximately 8 kilometres long, and considering it is a moderately challenging route, it takes around three to four hours to complete the loop around the Coloane Aito. The trail is crisscrossed with other paths that bring you to nearby attractions, such as the Coloane Village, Hac-Sa Beach, the Panda Pavilion and the A-Ma Cultural Village at its peak.

Difficulty: Moderate (8 kilometres with an estimated duration of 3 hours)

How to get there: Buses 15, 21A, 25, 26, 26A, 50 & N3. Get off at Parque De Seac Pai Van and walk for 5 minutes.

Hac Sá Long Chao Kok Coastal Trail

Located also in Coloane, this trail takes you on a seaside journey from Hac-Sa to the Chuk Wan villas. There is not much lush greenery compared to the Coloane Trail, however the paved walk gets you a stunning view of the sea and a spectacular sunset viewpoint. It is the best outdoor destination where you can feel the pulse of the sea and appreciate the rocky coastal terrain with a Red Pagoda by the sea.

Difficulty: Easy (1.2 kilometres with an estimated duration of 1 hour)

How to get there: Buses 15, 21A, 26A. Get off at Hellene Garden

Hac-Sa Reservoir Country Park

The Hac-Sa Reservoir is the perfect place for you to have a stroll by the beautiful turquoise water for a peaceful retreat. The trail is approximately 1.8 kilometres long and takes around one to two hours to complete. Along the way, there are fitness facilities where you can do some working out in the mountains.

Another must-see attraction is the Hac-Sa Reservoir Hanging Bridge, where you can cross the reservoir, and look at the stunning views of surrounding mountains. After crossing the bridge, you’ll arrive at the Centro de Diversoes Aquaticas da Barragem de Hac-Sa, where you can enjoy some paddling along the reservoir.

Difficulty: Easy (1.8 kilometres with an estimated duration of 1.5 hours)

Grande Taipa Trail

Take a trip to the Grand Taipa Hiking Trail and you’ll get to see the sweeping views of the Taipa Island and the Macau Peninsula. The trail is 4 kilometres long and takes about two hours to walk, which is suited for beginners and families.

Along the way, you can find a Grass Skiing Ground where you can have some fun in the hills. But that’s not all, The Taipa Grande Camellia Garden is also a must visit during your hike. The Camellia flowers blossom at their best from December till February. One stretch of the trail brings you on a long stairway walk to the highest point of Taipa, once you reached the top, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view of the city.

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate (4 kilometres with an estimated duration of 2 hours)

How to get there: Bus 37. Get off at Hotel China Coroa D’ouro and walk for 10 minutes.

Guia Hill Trail

Cross the harbour back to the peninsula and you can still have an urban retreat in the city. The Guia Hill Trail is one of the popular hiking spots. Standing 90 meters above ground, Guia Hill is the highest point in the peninsula, where you can have a spectacular view of the city.

The trail is around 2.2 kilometres long and takes around one to two hours to complete. The Guia Hill Peak is host to a UNESCO protected lighthouse and a church set inside an ancient fortress. With several different paths on offer, you can choose a hike that is most suitable for you to enjoy the greenery in the city.

Difficulty: Easy (2.2 kilometres with an estimated duration of 2 hours)

How to get there: Buses 8A, 18, 18A, 19, 26. Get off at Praça de Luís de Camões and walk for 10 minutes
